Lesson 15

1. ​The verb to become: the nif’al of to be

Present tense of to become is formed with the verb to be in nif’al:

2. to become in colloquial Hebrew

In spoken Hebrew the Israeli often uses auxiliary constructions with the verb hofech – to turn into or with the nif’al of the verb to make – ne’esah, i.e. is made or was made.

  • She has become strange in the last time:

    • היא נעשתה משונה בזמן האחרון  hi ne’estah meshunah be-zman ha-acharon

  • He will become director next week:

    • הוא הופך להיות מנהל בשבוע הבא  hu hofech liheyot menahel be-shavua ha-ba

3. The 6th binyan: pu’al

pu’al is the passive conjugation of the binyan pi’el.

  • pa'al    פעל

  • pi'el    פיעל

  • hif'il    הפעיל

  • hitpa'el    התפעל

  • nif'al    פעל

  • pu'al    פיעל

  • huf'al    הפעיל

pu’al is little used in spoken Hebrew. pu’al appears only in past and future tense, not in the present.

 

Frequent is also the participle passive as metupal – treated, patient.

In newspapers you will find pu’al above all in the 3rd person past tense.

  • The patient was treated successfully:

    • החולה טופל בהצלחה  ha-choleh tupal be-hatzlachah

3. The 6th binyan: pu’al

4. The 7th binyan: huf’al

Huf’al is the passive- conjugation of the binyan hif’il.:

  • huf'al    הפעיל

huf’al is little used in spoken Hebrew. huf’al appears only in past and future tense, not in the present.

 

Frequent is also the passive participle such as muzman – invited

huf’al: past tense passive of the hif’il-verb mazmin – to invite
